Project Leader for South Africa Strategic Impact Area

The Project Leader will work closely with both North American and South African partners to serve as a bridge between project staff, church and donor partners in North America. The Project Leader will develop and maintain positive community relationships within staff, churches and associations and serve as a liaison between Bethany Christian Services Global, the Reformed Church in America (RCA), partner churches in North America and South Africa and Sethshabelo Family and Child Services. This person works 25 hours per week.

The Project Leader will coordinate with Bethany Global and RCA staff as well as the marketing and communications departments of the RCA to establish a communication plan to raise awareness about and funding for programming in South Africa. The Project Leader will maintain a smooth and efficient channel of communication between all parties and exhibit excellent written and oral communication skills to recruit at both the macro and micro levels.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

  1. Create a mission network for South Africa. The Coordinator will lead a network of churches and individuals in North America who have a passion for ministry in South Africa The network will provide a forum for increased communication to and among the network members.  It will help to keep people informed with up to date information and will provide a forum to highlight volunteer and giving opportunities. with Setshabelo Family and Child Services. 
  2. Develop a platform for social media within the network, craft newsletters, inform delegations from the RCA and others churches of volunteer and fund raising opportunities; promote partner programs to RCA churches, colleges, and Christian schools. Keep in regular contact with RCA supervisor and staff of Bethany Global, Setshabelo Family and Child Service and Encompass Kids, Inc., a North American non profit fundraising agency supporting South Africa partnership initiatives.
  3. Form and maintain strategic partnerships that support and collaborate with projects in Botshabelo, South Africa. Actively fundraising, promoting projects and gathering volunteer contributions for projects
  4. Available for public speaking engagements as chief story teller of programming in South Africa, and able to preach (when needed) in North America and South Africa.
  5. Lead 3-4 vision and mission trips to South Africa yearly; setting up in-country logistics and planning the
  6. Provide training opportunities on educational program and itinerary with the trip leaders, and lead reflection discussions with participants, as requested. hosting delegations, cultural dynamics, and on partnership priorities, as requested.
  7. Participate in mission interpreting efforts, including assisting North American delegations and individuals, writing newsletters, doing itineration at scheduled intervals, and participate in mission training events or conferences, as requested.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Committed to the mission and vision of the RCA.
  2. Cross-cultural competency with knowledge and experience in the context of South Africa. Willingness to learn Sesotho language.
  3. Demonstrate a commitment to Christ and a heart for working with South African leaders to promote holistic care of orphaned and vulnerable children. 
  4. Be a creative, out-of-box thinker able to be self-driven to build and maintain relationships domestically and internationally by working independently and within a team.
  5. Must have a knowledge of funding sources, ability to raise funds, and proven ability to work with and inspire diverse constituencies within the RCA.
  6. Strong computer skills to perform essential functions and strong written and oral communication skills.
  7. Ability to travel 30-45 days per year internationally, 20-30 days per year domestically.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in a field of social science, theology, or communications, religious training.
  2. A minimum of five years of experience working in mission or church ministry, community development, cross-cultural education, social services or advocacy experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Sous Espwa and Resonate-Haiti field administration

  1. Ensure completion of planning and reporting requirements for Resonate and Sous Espwa
  2. Ensure good stewardship of and reporting on Resonate financial resources according to CRCNA and Resonate requirements
  3. Provide care and encouragement of Resonate staff and volunteers on the Haiti field
  4. Perform all assigned Sous Espwa administrative roles (depending on team needs and decisions) such as participating in the leadership team, security team, in-country networking and constituency relations
  5. Coordinate with World Renew and Perspectives Réformées national leaders

B. Working with Haitian partner organizations according to their needs and capacities

  1. Connect and consult with Sous Espwa partners who are engaged in church growth, development projects, and church leader training
  2. In partnership with the Program and Partner Advisor, assure that the groundwork for healthy relationships with Resonate partners and associated ministries is present (partnership agreements, annual ministry plans, evaluations, relationships, etc.)
  3. Consult with Perspectives Réformées with regard to plans, reports, budgets and other Resonate-Haiti business.
  4. Partner with Perspectives Réformées to design and implement the annual worship conference
  5. Teach at seminaries and facilitate leadership development programs according to need and strategic interest
  6. In partnership with the General Secretary of the Christian Reformed Church of Haiti ( ECRH), oversee and report on church construction projects

C. Cultivating relationships within the North American support base

  1. Participate in support-raising (e.g., prayer, care and financial support) for Resonate ministries by developing and maintaining a network of supporting churches and individuals
  2. Ensure notes of thanks are sent to donors in a timely manner
  3. Educate the CRCNA and others about the nature of the global church and its mission, encouraging them to develop a deeper passion and involvement in global missions
  4. Provide the CRCNA with insight and resources for ministry among minority racial/national/religious groups living in North America about which the missionary has knowledge and expertise
  5. Communicate the nature and value of Resonate’s ministries to the CRCNA and others through written communications, and through preaching/speaking engagements
  6. Help recruit, organize, and host teams that come to learn about Haiti and support the CRCNA partnering ministries found there
  7. Develop church-to-church and church-to-community partnerships between North Americans and Haitians

Manager of Retirement Services

The manager, in consultation with the executive director, provides strategic vision, planning, administration and overall management of the retirement program administered by the Board of Benefits Services (BOBS). The manager provides primary oversight of retirement services vendor relations serving as the advocate for the retirement programs and the best interests of plan participants. The manager represents and promotes the retirement program in a professional manner within and outside the Reformed Church in America (RCA) and effectively interacts and communicates with participants, eligible participants and their employers.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

  1. Oversee the plan administration for the nonqualified deferred compensation and 403(b) retirement plans in compliance with the plan documents and in accordance with the Book of Church Order.
  2. Oversee retirement plan vendor relations including the relationship with the plan custodian and record keeper. Advocate for participants as needed. Represent the plan effectively with the retirement plan custodian, record keeper and other vendors. Maintain Plan Administration Manual.
  3. Oversee all other aspects of  BOBS, including participant services, contribution verification project, reallocation progam, New York State filing, retirement services form, and adoption agreement compliance, etc.
  4. Provide leadership, management, support and mentoring to assigned staff.
  5. Serve as an active member of the RCA Audit Committee and RCA Investment Advisory Committee as they relate to BOBS. With the executive director, ensure that advice from the Audit and Investment Advisory Committees as approved by the BOBS’ board is implemented.
  6. Be prepared and available for consultation with auditors. Ensure plan compliance, financial integrity and, in collaboration with the executive director, implement corrections identified in auditor’s management comments.
  7. Work with participants, financial advisors, insurance companies and retirement custodian in the purchase of annuities for participants. With the assistance of the BOBS investment consultant, properly vet insurance companies and investment funds. Maintain current list of annuities purchased from the non-qualified plan in the name of BOBS, send 1099s to participants, acquire annual valuation for audit.
  8. Manage distributions in cases of divorce of participants. This includes working with participants, ex-spoues, their attorneys and the retirement custodian, to carry out terms of the court order and Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) and/or Domestic Relations Order (DRO) in accordance with the plan documents.
  9. Participate in and make effective presentations at Classis Clerks meetings, BOBS board meetings, classis meetings and other denominational meetings when requested.
  10. Provide input for the design, development and fulfillment of marketing, communication and education objectives and the resulting initiatives for participants and employers.
  11. Provide ongoing strategic review of the retirement plans including developing and executing plan changes that best support the needs of participants.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher in related field.
  2. Five to seven years progressive experience in retirement services.
  3. Three to five years prior supervisory experience.
  4. Ability to travel up to 25 days per year.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to think strategically about, manage, and implement all aspects of a non-qualified deferred compensation plan and a 403(b) retirement plan in a church plan environment.
  6. An ability and commitment to work collaboratively with a leadership team and to support, mentor, and supervise a staff team.
  7. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work within a wider organization and cooperate in the formation/fulfillment of the church’s shared mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership:

  • Promotes and actively engages in strategic planning and execution of all aspects of our church’s mission and vision
  • Provides direct supervision and support to church staff through regular meetings and ongoing support
  • Participates as a member of the administrative elders and regularly attends shepherd elder meetings
  • Provides guidance, training and direction to support and empower healthy and impactful ministry level teams
  • Represents the church, as necessary, at Grand Rapids South Classis meetings and serves on classical/denominational committees as appropriate
  • Serves as a role model for ongoing personal and professional development
  • Carries out other additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administrative elders
  • Discipleship and Outreach:
  • Serves as a member of the discipleship team
  • Promotes, encourages and engages with members’ discipleship and outreach in all areas of the church’s ministry
  • Actively engages in a relationship in which he is being discipled

Pastoral Care:

  • Collaborates and provides ongoing alignment and support with the pastor of visitation and the shepherd elders in an effort to meet the varied needs of our members
  • May upon request provide services such as counseling, weddings and funerals
  • Actively engages in prayer with and for our church family and community Worship
  • Preaches regularly; usually twice each Sunday during a morning and an evening service with two services off a month (not including vacation)
  • Serves as worship leader during services
  • Actively participates in the planning of worship with the worship coordinator

  4. Manage and maintain all technical aspects related to services of worship, including sound, projection, lighting, and software.
  5. Lead rehearsals for Sunday worship.
  6. Grow in personal life of prayer, worship, study, and community in ways that there is a growing ability to lead worship services with both professionalism and personal vulnerability and to live as an example of worship integrated into life.

Organizational Relationships:
