Second Sunday in Lent (Year A)

If any want to become my followers,
let them deny themselves
and take up their cross daily and follow me.
Luke 9:23

Prayer of Confession

O God of our salvation,
    give light to us
    who come to you in the dark night of sin.
Let your truth
    pierce whatever hides your will from our hearts;
let your Spirit
    sweep away the vanity of our lives;
bring us new birth
    so we might see the glory of your kingdom,
    given when you gave your only Son,
    Jesus Christ, to be our Savior.
(From Pray to the Lord)

Assurance of Pardon

The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting.
I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness,
and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

Prayer for Illumination

Eternal God, the light of the minds that know you,
    the joy of the hearts that love you,
   and the strength of the wills that serve you:
grant us so to know you that we may truly love you,
    and so to love you that we may fully serve you,
    whom to serve is perfect freedom, in Jesus Christ our Lord.
(A prayer after St. Augustine, from Pray to the Lord)
