Third Sunday in Lent (Year B)

The heavens are telling the glory of God;
the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple.
The fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever.
Clear me from hidden faults.
Then I shall be blameless.
and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you, O Lord,
my rock and redeemer. Amen.

Adapted from Psalm 19

Call to Confession

God’s Word assures us:

If we say that we have no sin,
we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,
he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God.

Based on 1 John 1:8-9

Prayer of Confession

God of grace,
we confess that we have elevated
the things of this world above you.
We have made idols of possessions and people
and used your name for causes
that are not consistent with you and your purposes.
We have permitted our schedules to come first
and have not taken the time to worship you.
We have not always honored those who guided us in life.
We have participated in systems
that take life instead of give it.
We have been unfaithful in our covenant relationships.
We have yearned for, and sometimes taken, that which is not ours,
and we have misrepresented others’ intentions.
Forgive us, O God,
for the many ways we fall short of your glory.<
Help us to learn to live together according to your ways
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Based on Exodus 20:1-17

Assurance of Pardon

“In a surge of anger
I hid my face from you for a moment,
but with everlasting kindness
I will have compassion on you,”
says the Lord your Redeemer.
“I, even I, am he who blots out
your transgressions, for my own sake,
and remembers your sins no more.”
“I have swept away your offenses like a cloud,
your sins like morning mist.
Return to me,
for I have redeemed you.”

Adapted from Isaiah 54:8; 43:25; 44:22, NIV

Prayer for Illumination

God of Jesus Christ,
give us a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Christ,
so that the eyes of our hearts might be enlightened.
Help us to know the hope to which you have called us,
the riches of the glorious inheritance in the saints,
and the immeasurable greatness of your power at work in us.
Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Based on Ephesians 1:17-19
