In early October of 2016, Hurricane Matthew devastated many communities in North Carolina. Some areas were still under water two weeks after the hurricane. Volunteers with World Renew Disaster Response Services are helping residents in Tarboro, NC recover.

World Renew DRS is hoping to have teams serving in Tarboro from January 18 – April 11, 2020. Groups typically volunteer for one week.

Volunteer opportunities:

The primary focus will be on drywall, trim, and flooring in houses and mobile homes that have flood damage. Work may also include painting, cabinet installation, outdoor projects, and electrical or plumbing. In some cases, foundations or piers may need work. A World Renew DRS facilitator will be on-site to coordinate your work projects.

Accommodations:

Teams will stay at the United Methodist Church Community House in Tarboro, which offers a kitchen, and two-bed bedrooms for up to 18 volunteers (larger teams may bring air mattresses). A shower trailer is provided and there are 4 full RV hookups on site.

Group size - maximum:
20
Cost notes:

Teams will be responsible for the cost of their travel and meals. World Renew is covering the cost of lodging and supplies, so a “thank you” donation is appreciated.

Packing suggestions:

Please bring sleeping bags, pillows, towels, and toiletries. A general packing list can be found on page nine of Preparing to Serve, a guide compiled by World Renew DRS. Materials and basic tools are provided and coordinated by the local construction coordinator. Skilled tradesmen are encouraged to bring their own tools if possible. This should be discussed with the local site coordinator during the planning process.

Qualifications:

Generally, high school age (14) and older are welcome. Groups that include youth age 18 and younger must have an appropriate adult-to-youth ratio and adults who are able to supervise youth for work projects. It is helpful to have a couple of people with construction experience in your group, but this is not required. The local construction coordinator will provide guidance on work projects.
