Metro Detroit is still on the mend from historic flooding that ravaged the city in the summer of 2014. Then-president Barack Obama declared it a major disaster for Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties. That declaration helped to bring in assistance, but there is still a lot of long-term recovery work to be done.
Most of the work needed is reconstruction: insulation, drywall, flooring, trim, and painting. World Renew DRS is partnering with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief and other organizations that have a steady presence in the community. There is a local construction coordinator who will assign work projects that are appropriate to the size and skill level of the volunteer group.
Housing is available at a church on the east side of Detroit. Plan to bring an air mattress or cot, sleeping bag or bedding, pillow, towels, and personal toiletries. A kitchen is available for your group to prepare your own meals. Showers will be available at a nearby YMCA or health center.
Cost is $15 per person per night. Your group is responsible for all costs associated with your trip outside of what the special funding covers, such as travel and meals. World Renew does not charge for arranging group mission trips.
A general list of what to bring can be found on page nine of Preparing to Serve. The site coordinator will tell you about any packing needs specific to this site.
Volunteers must be 14 years old and above. For every five volunteers who are under 18, there must be a same-gender chaperone.
No particular skills are required, but it is preferable for each group to have at least one person who has significant construction experience and can take the lead on group projects.
