Work with the forestry service to help restore the area in and around Yosemite National Park that was damaged by wildfire in September 2013. Although it’s not rebuilding homes for families, the damage from the wildfires does affect the livelihood of many families dependent on the recreation industry.
The work is just outside the west entrance to Yosemite National Park, along Hwy. 120. Work includes:
• Restoration of trails
• Fence reconstruction
• Installation of tree nursery
• Invasive weed removal before they have a chance to take over the burn areas.
• Preparation of family camp for summer
• Starting in late 2016, they will also be doing a lot of native tree planting.
A local coordinator will assign work projects that are appropriate to the size and skill level of your group.
You will be staying at San Jose Family Camp. The site offers rustic living—wood cabins (each cabin sleeps four and includes cots with mattresses), separate restroom/bath house, community room, and kitchen/mess hall. Three meals a day are included.
$20 per person/night, payable to the local site coordinator. Your group is responsible for all costs associated with your trip.
Volunteers should bring sleeping bags, pillows, towels, toiletries; other general items may be requested/suggested by your host. A general list of what to bring can be found in Prepare to Serve. Supplies, tools, and safety equipment are provided. Volunteers can bring work gloves if they like.
All ages able to do the work are welcome; youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
No experience necessary. The local coordinator will provide guidance on work projects.
